Excerpt from Patten Genealogy: William Patten of Cambridge, 1635 and His Descendants England in 1907 failed to discover any definite and positive trace Of the family before coming to this country. I wish also here to express my thanks to the members of the family who in many cases have responded so freely to the inquiries I have made, and who have been ready to furnish and ascertain anything that might assist me. Some families will be found to be incomplete. This is due to two causes: one, lack Of information about parties who could furnish the material; another, neglect of parties, who were able to furnish the material, but failed to reply to inquiries made Of them; the number of these is very small. Errors very likely may be found, but in a work of this size it is difficult not to have some occur; but I trust that I have kept them at a minimum. In some cases I have found two different dates for the same event. This may account for some apparent discrepancies. In closing, perhaps, I cannot do better than to quote a paragraph I once saw in a genealogy, the author being given as B. L. Swan. He said: There is no perfect genealogical work extant, nor can one be made. The causes of error are many and difficult to avoid.
