Living Era's tribute to romantic French crooner Tino Rossi is a treasure chest of beautiful romantic airs, ballads, berceuses and pop tunes. Rossi, who had lyrical subtleties in common with Enrico Caruso, was a product of the time-honored tradition of the itinerant troubadour. Constantino Rossi was born in Ajaccio, on the west coast of the island of Corsica, on April 29, 1907. Inspired by what he heard at the opera house, Rossi developed his remarkably attractive voice by singing while accompanying himself on the guitar in the cafes and bistros of Ajaccio, Aix-en-Provence and Marseilles. He made his first recordings in 1932 for the Parlophone label in Paris, where he received unprecedented acclaim after an engagement at the Theatre des Varietes in 1933. Rossi made the first of hundreds of phonograph recordings for the Columbia label in 1934; his career, which spanned forty years, included countless appearances on radio and television and no less than 28 movies. Indeed, it was as a screen idol that Tino Rossi achieved his greatest popular successes. Judging by the 24 selections gathered into this compilation, Rossi could transform just about any melody into an arrestingly beatific reverie. His "O Sole Mio" is superb. Lullabies and Christmas carols become uncommonly substantial. Even the inescapable French pop tune "Vieni, Vieni," said to have been composed in two minutes flat by the singer's prolific collaborator Vincent Scotto, sounds unusually relevant as it issues from the lips of Tino Rossi. ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi
