As far as mystery stories go, this book is top shelf! As far as Maisie Dobbs mysteries go, it was great. However, it lacked the depth of exploration of Winspear's former two efforts. Perhaps that is because Maisie seems to be developing into a character who will be gracing bookshelves on a yearly basis....
This book's plot develops similar to Birds of a Feather. Mostly casework but Maisie's life takes up a good bit of space as well. The casework is still quite compelling, but Maisie's life wasn't sketched as completely in this one as in the former volumes....she seems a lot less sure about who she is.
