Since the essays in this book were gleaned from editorials Hiaasen wrote between the 1980s and 2000, in news terms they're old news. But the issues of destruction of natural habitat and undermining of the common good by corporate interests are still highly relevant. Since I'm reading all his novels, these writings help illuminate where he gets his ideas. The novels are based on reality, despite their bigger than life characters.
One longer piece about trying to introduce his son to what was once a magical place in the Keys, but which has been ruined by man's intervention, was particularly moving.
