Seller's Description:
Good. 22 cm, 119, illus. with photos, bookplate, ink notation on front endpaper. Preface by Norman Mailer. The author was Ernest Hemingway's youngest son. This memoir describes the personal relationship that existed between father and son.
This biography was written by Hemingway's third and youngest son, by his second wife Pauline. Gregory, or Gig as he was nicknamed by his family, writes honestly and with affection for the father with whom he was estranged for years. His fondest memories of him were at a competitive "shoot", where Ernest teaches his son all the skills needed to win against adults at the age of 11 ! His devotion to teaching his sons hunting and fishing skills won their undying admiration and even "Gig", with whom he disagreed in later life, still adored him for this fatherly trait. Gig was to spend summers with his father in Key West, after his parents divorced and this book is largely a reminiscence of the times they enjoyed together. It is a heart warming account of the love between a father and his youngest son. Gig's accounts of the women Ernest married for the third and fourth times, gives some insight into the unsettled life style that his Father seem to thrive on, at least creatively. His grief at the depression that Hemingway suffered and the suicide, left indelible marks upon Gig., and the latter part of the book deals with his compromise and adjustment to their stormy relatiionship. You will find many tender passages in this book that yield insight into the genius of the father and devotion of the son.
