R.E.G. Davies, like the institution for which he worked - The Smithsonian - came to America as a gift of Great Britain. This gift is without question the single most knowledgeable authority on commercial air travel who ever lived!
In this book (as with many of the other "An Airline and its Aircraft" series) one finds a perfect marriage of scholarship and high art. The scholarship is pure Davies...who lays out the entire airline's history and fleet in great and intimate detail. The art comes in most cases from commercial aviation artist Mike Machat, who's plates of the individual aircraft (and a comparison scaled drawing) are so real that there bare metal surfaces actually glint (not a metaphor...a reality)!
Together these boys have profiled Pan Am, Eastern, Delta, Lufthansa, Aeroflot, TWA...unfortunately along the way they have gotten side tracked with stranger projects outside of the series nature...Transbrasil, Saudi Air, Berlin Airlift, Lindbergh, De Havilland Comet, Howard Hughes....why I do not know. The latest offering in 2005 dealt with British Airways during its years as Imperial Airways and had effective but mediocre artwork by Davies himself...why this should be I do not know.... but It doesn't bode well for future titles!
In a perfect world.... Davies, who is now something like 90 years old and Machat, who seems to have found other things to do with his time (falling out?), would reunite to complete the missing histories of American and United... Air France, KLM, Continental, Alitalia, British Airways (B.O.A.C./ BEA predecessors), etc...The old line giants of commercial aviation - no shortage of material.
Do not get me wrong! I am thankful for what I have....and will take that which has been given...but books this good demand company!
I would highly recommend this and any other R.E.G. Davies book. If Mike Machat is aboard so very much the better! A+
