Excerpt from Palaeographia Latina, Vol. 4 In the Palatini Iatini at the Vatican Library there are only a few ninth century mss. Of Mayence, compared with the crowd from Lorsch (see Palae. Lat. III pp. But these few seem to remind us by their very appearance that Mayence was an archbishopric, while Lorsch was only an abbacy (though an abbacy of great importance and wealth). The volumes are more imposing. The vellum of better qua lity, the very lettering seems grander. The first two plates (i from Pal. Lat. 578; ii from Pal. Lat. 1447) will, with Chate lain's two plates (pal. Classiques lat. 56-57) from the 'oblon gus codex' of Lucretius (leyden Voss. F and Tangl's from the Munich ms. Of Boniface's Letters, suffice to acquaint us with the characteristic (continental) minuscule (bold and large) of Mayence in the ninth century. (there is a full photographic facsimile of the oblongus' in the Sijthoff se ries, with an Introduction by Chatelain). Plate iii (from Pal. Lat. 579) shews another phase; and, while the others are mu tually protective, it stands alone. Unprotected against any strong claim for different provenance. Still its abbreviation tallies with that of Pal. Lat. 1447. And Schiaparelli's recent book on Lucca has exploded the notion that variety of script is inconceivable at a scriptorium. At Mayence, with its monastery of St Martin founded by Boniface and his English missionary-band, one expects to find (and does apparently find) the same state of things as at Wuerzburg, at first a predominance of English script, subsequently a gradual encroachment by Continental. The Wuerzburg mss. Of the transition-period shew a hybrid script, haft English and half Continental. Similarly the Mayence ms. (pal. Lat. 845) from which plates iv-v are taken. The corrector of the oblongus' Lucretius used English script; and Chatelain's plate 56 shews a page of which the last five lines (added by the corrector) are in Anglosaxon minuscule.
