This is an excellent book to learn watercolor still life's. The techniques that Liz Donovan teaches, can certainly be applied to other watercolor subjects as well. It has a very fresh feel about it.
Donovan gives step-by-step demonstrations on how to capture sunlit textures and colors of such things as lace, clear and colored glass, grass, copper, silver, wood grains, different types of marble, fruits and flowers, velvet, patterned fabric and flowered wallpaper. This book is filled with wonderful lessons such as "preliminary drawing method", creating light and shadow with color, avoiding muddy color, achieving beautiful granular effects, intense blacks, gentle grays, beautiful brown-grays, the importance of values, etc..
Donovan's demonstrations are organized in a very simple way, usually taking two pages with 3-4 illustrations. She gives the color palette, then proceeds by showing a photo of what to paint, then follows by illustrated stepped demonstrations. Her teaching is easy to follow and understand. The paintings are beautiful. This is a wonderful book to learn and improve on watercolor techniques. I love this book.
