"Painted Ponies" is a celebration of the magic and joy that these whirling fantasies of armored chargers, galloping Indian ponies, fiery military steeds and magical menagerie figures have brought to all of us. Now recognized as vanishing treasures, the last of these classic, wooden carousels were carved in the 1920s by immigrant craftsmen. A handful of artists were responsible for creating a dazzling art from which has entertained, thrilled and fascinated generations of Americans.

Being passionate about carousel art, I have studied the American carousel artists & styles over the last 10 years or so. I have slowly collected a nice group of reference books on this topic and lately added this title to my library.
The photographs are of excellent quality throughout the book and are mainly full colour, with varied examples of the best-known styles represented (including some detailed close-ups). Whilst the history of carousel art may not be everyone's cup of tea, I'm sure anyone with memories of riding these magical creature's will enjoy a sentimental picture journey back into childhood fantasy.
For the more serious carousel buff, all the well-known carousel styles are represented without bias. I found the text to be knowledgable, entertaining and the style easy to read. There was a nice balance of information about the artist's history, technique & influences, but without overwhelming the average reader.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first (and subsequent) perusal of this book, it is truly a work of great appreciation for a bygone art form and is worthy of a closer look.
