The interactive nature of modern medicine is emphasized by presenting a series of chapters co-authored by specialists in other fields such as cardiology and neurology. The scientific basis of rheumatic disease is described in terms of molecular genetics, immunology, and developmental biology, and future directions for research are identified. The investigation and diagnosis of rheumatic disease are described in a series of chapters incorporating techniques from the simplest hematological tests to MRI scanning techniques.
