Seller's Description:
Very Good with no dust jacket. [iv], xx, [iv], 548 pp. With engraved title frontis facing the title page, a full page portrait of the Princess of Wales, numerous engraved initials and head/tail pieces, and 15 full page engraved plates showing scenes from each of the 15 books, each dedicated to a different English noblewoman, including the Duchess of Kingston, Countess Hartford, Princess Anne, Lady Cooper, etc. Edited by Sam Garth and translated by the eminent hands of John Dryden, Joseph Addison, Arthur Mainwaring, S. Croxall, N. Tate, J. Goy, W. Congreve, and C. Eusden and a few others. The book is a monumental edition of Ovid's monumental poem, his magnum opus. It (along with Mathew Prior's Poems) marked the culmination of English publisher Jacob Tonson's career. The very lavishness and size of this publication was thought to be, at least in part, compensation on Tonson's part for the failure of his previous edition of Thomas Ti'ckell's Iliad. So he seemingly spared no effort or expense in producing this edition, hoping for a better result. He would not be disappointed. This work became the standard Metamorphosis in English, a basis for later translations, and was widely praised for both the quality of English translation and the lavish and beautiful production values. It is a very large folio, measuring 17x11", in new 3/4 dark brown leather with green and brown feather marbled boards, spine with 5 raised bands, red morocco label and gilt in the compartments, quite beautiful. Interior has a bookplate of Edward Disbrowe, Esq., Of Walton in Derbyshire, presumably the English soldier and politician (1754–1818) who was a great-great-nephew of Oliver Cromwell. The frontis engraved title page has been remounted, title page with a few small stains, text has the occasional small stain, a few repairs at bottom edges (not affecting text), otherwise clean and nice. “One of the most influential and popular works in all literature, Ovid's Metamorphoses is a weaving-together of classical myths, extending in time from the creation of the world to the death of Julius Caesar. ” It primarily deals with transformation and the fluidity of identity-certainly quite modern topics here in a compelling mythological format. It is one of the most influential texts in Western literature, the source of many mythological tales as transformed by among others, Dante, Boccaccio and Shakespeare. This is one of the premier translations into English, by some of England's greatest poets, including Alexander Pope, Joseph Addison, John Gay, William Congreve, Nicholas Row, and Nahum Tate and John Dryden, the first Poet Laureate of England. The opening preface by Garth has Latin along with the English, but the rest is English all the way. The powerful poems are enhanced by quite spectacular full page plates. An impressive and beautiful book with a nice provenance, and with wonderful renditions of Ovid's famous Metamorphoses into English. OCLC 459050290; Folio 13"-23" tall; 548 pages.
