Two unrelated bands have an album apiece reissued in this CD set from Collectables. The Wilbur DeParis portion, which was originally released as Over and Over Again, features the band during 1958-1960 and has its last recordings plus a few earlier titles left out of other LPs. On most of the tunes, trombonist DeParis is joined by both Doc Cheatham and Sidney DeParis on trumpets and Garvin Bushell on clarinet and bassoon, though there are a few earlier titles that have Omer Simeon still on clarinet. The repertoire is typically intriguing, including "Table Thumpers Rag," Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene," "How Ya Gonna Keep 'Em Down on the Farm?," and two versions of "Over and Over Again." The second half of this CD features the World's Greatest Jazz Band on their finest recording, live music from 1970 featuring trumpeters Yank Lawson and Billy Butterfield, tenor saxophonist Bud Freeman, Bob Wilber on clarinet and soprano, both Vic Dickenson and Lou McGarity on trombones, pianist Ralph Sutton, bassist Bob Haggart, and drummer Gus Johnson. The band never sounded better than on such numbers as "That's A-Plenty," "My Honey's Loving Arms," "Come Back Sweet Papa," and "The Jazz Me Blues." It is for the WGJB that this disc is particularly recommended, even if they get second billing. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
