I am old enough to have lived through WWII; I was born in NYC less than 9-months before September 1, 1939 when the Nazis invaded Poland. As a result, some of my memories of the war are solid, others are likely based on what my parents (and others) told me when I was older.
For example...
I remember rationing.
I remember blackout curtains.
I remember playing on the floor of the kitchen in April of 1945 when my mother suddenly started crying; the bulletin on WQXR was that FDR had died. (As my mother explained later, "he was the only president I ever voted for". Her first vote was in 1932.)
I remember a plaque on the wall of the elevator in our apartment building, but I never focused on the fact that it was Civil Defense-related; frankly, I didn't have any idea what it was: now I know.
I remember bringing cans of waste fat to the butcher, and I always wondered why we did that. Now I know what the fat was used for.
That said...
This is a book for anyone interested in what it was like living in NYC during WWII. If you're old enough to have memories of your own, this will put those memories into a context that you wouldn't have had otherwise -- unless you were a lot older than I by the time the war ended.
If you're too young to have independent memories of WWII and how it affected the lives of everyday people, this will give you a real feeling for what it was like -- a better understanding than from anything else I've ever read or seen.
Highly recommended!!!!
