But I have some hope that those of the general public who wish to know something of the subject, but are not prepared to go into details, may also find it useful. As it is meant for reading, not cram ming, I have put it in the form of a consecu tive narrative, avoiding statistics and scrappy disconnected statements. My aim has been to make it readable and interesting, so far as its extreme brevity admitted; and to give the reader, whether child or adult, a clear view, in small space, of the leading features of Irish.
