Since 1891 much has been added to the scholar's knowledge of archaology and to the critic's perception of artistic truth; but, since 1 860, the whole point of View has changed. The history of art which is possible to-day was unthinkable in 1860; many assumptions have been proved untrue; many known facts have wholly different explana tions now, from those once thought sufficient.
