After a year and a half as a cornerstone of another "supergroup" power trio with Leslie West (guitar) and Corky Laing (drums), Bruce (bass) came from the experience in need of solace. He deferred to his longtime writing partner Peter Brown and, along with a co-composition credit on "Running Through Our Hands" by Bruce's wife, Janet Godfrey, he created an album of very personal and emotive material. Joining Bruce (vocals/ bass/piano/clavinet/Fender piano/organ/harmonium/harmonica) are Steve Hunter (guitars) and a pair of high-profile drummers in the respective personas of Jim Keltner and Jim Gordon. Although recovering from the effects of significant substance abuse during the West, Bruce & Laing days, he hadn't lost either his multi-instrumental chops or his penchant for complex arrangements. This is immediately evident on the tricky syncopation during "Peaces of Mind" and the laid-back beauty of "Golden Days," which has a pastoral groove that instantly recalls early recordings by the Band. "Running Through Our Hands" is interesting as it commences with a slightly dark tone and spirals into a love song bathed in a noticeably Eastern flavor. "Keep on Wondering" sports some great weaving counterpoint and would have fit nicely on Cream's Disraeli Gears (1967) .
