This is the first title of what was to become the eleven volumes series "The story of Civilization". In my view, a work without precedents, nor - thus far and, I fear, for a long time to come - followers. With some regret, I have discovered this author somewhat late (in my life) and after reading the whole work almost in its entirety, more than once, I cannot imagine why it has been forgotten - at least it seems so to me - by the reading public. This title sets the pace and whets the appetite for the other ten. I am happy to say that its promise is more than abundantly met: it is in fact exceeded. To anyone who is, even tentatively interested in History, this would certainly be the most auspicious beginning of a lifetime of intellectual adventures.
