She died in April, 1886, after many years of sickness, during which, like so many other gifted women, she found relief and pleasure in the use of her pen. With a sensitive nature, a high ideal, and a consequent distrust of her own work, she was peculiarly reluctant that any one should recognize her literary ventures. A first attempt was the publication of some articles in Hunt's Merchants' Magazine which were signed O. A. W., meaning.
