De Quincey while stigmatizing this use of antecedents adopted it, and we should rack our ingenuity in vain to find any other word which, in the case where he employed it, would have answered his purpose. And in the very sense in which De Quincey used it--as it were against his will--antecedents has been a favorite word with Cardinal Newman. To the instances cited by Mr. Hall I will add three others; it would be easy to increase the number. Froude Hurrell Froude and I were nobodies; with no characters to lose, and no antecedents to fetter us.--" Apologia," p. 38.
