When Elmer Kelton wrote a book 95% of the time you knew you would be getting a story about everyday people doing everyday things at a time when that was what was expected of you. His characters made you feel as if you knew them as friends and understood why they did what they did. Elmer Kelton was the only author, living author, I was purchasing, and now since he has died, I am at a loss as to who to read. I have tried others, but so far no one fills the bill. Was he the last of the "traditional" western writers? I don't know. But of one thing I am sure, his legacy will never be matched. Other Men's Horses stands on its own merits. Read it and come to know Elmer Kelton and the Texas he knew and loved to write about.
