Other Dementias may seem an odd title for a book. The interested reader might ask, other than what? Answering that question requires placing this volume in two contexts. The first context is, of course, that the book is part of an ongoing series on dementia from Carma Publishing, which includes titles on Alzheimers, Parkinsons, and Huntingtons disease, among others. The pages that follow address other illness states that cause dementia, but for which there is generally too little information known (or applicable) to support an individual volume on their cognitive effects. The second context is that, although plenty is written about conditions like alcoholism, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, HIV, hydrocephalus, metabolic disorders, and syphilis, their roles as causes of dementia are often treated as an afterthought. In discussions of dementia, they are often relegated to a paragraph or two near the end, or perhaps a table, addressing other or unusual causes. In contrast, disease-based reviews on these illnesses may mention dementia as a consequence, but rarely focus on the clinical features of the cognitive decline or how they might influence a clinicians reasoning when approaching the patient who presents with cognitive impairment.
