This text first presents the original conceptual foundations of key characteristics that apply to all systems sucha as a person, a family, a building, a team, a country, a living cell, a city, a tribe, etc. This first exploratory introduction considers how these basic characteristics or criteria can be coherently mapped out to provide a comprehensive understanding of any coherent ensemble or system. The author presents how universal system criteria can be refined and organized to better understand basic similarities, differences and complementarities within and between systems.
