In many instances it is the most important link in the chain of evidence which leads to diag nosis, and frequently it also leads to discovery of the cause of the disease. It serves the oral surgeon as a guide when operating, helps the dentist to determine the result of mechanical procedures and the research worker to follow the process of disease, the result of operations and the progress of healing.
