Excerpt from Onset, Etiology and Significance of Disease in Rabbits in Southern Illinois: Final Report, Submitted by Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory, Siuc, Presented to Illinois Department of Conservation, December 20, 1985 Wfsp, located in Franklin and Jefferson counties about 10 km north of Benton, Illinois, was dedicated as a multiple use recreation area in October 1975. Farming was the dominant land use prior to acquisition and development as a park; many fence rows, abandoned crop fields, cleared farmsteads and small woodlots remained. An abundant rabbit population was evident; rabbits were harvested in December 1975 during a 23 day controlled hunt. The following year 17 hunting days yielded but 246 rabbits. This substantial harvest reduction may have been attributable to overharvest, but winter 1975 was mild and good production would have been expected spring and summer 1976. Noteworthy was the statewide trend which showed a higher average season bag in 1976 than in 1975 (ellis l979).
