I was often surprised to look at the boys, who far exceeded me in courage and skill. Some of them would make their way up to the very top of the masthead. They would scramble up the rigging like young monkeys, and no thought of fear ever seemed to enter their minds. They could stow away the main royals; they understood all the ship's gear; they could row and steer the boats, coil the ropes in half a dozen different fashions and ways, scrub the decks, and go through no end of work that was fitting them for future active service in sea-going ships. All this roused my ambition, and I panted to do the same. Till I came on board I can truly say I had never in my life done a regular day's work; but now, except during the time for meals and the hours allowed for recreation, I found I must keep working away, and there was no use in trying to shirk any one duty, for punishment would surely follow on the steps of idleness or neglect. The discipline on board was firm without harshness; strict, but so mingled with Christian kindness and wisdom that it could not fail in training those who came under its influence. I did not understand all this at first, but the truth became plain to me as time went on, and I discovered it more and more the longer I stayed there.
