I gave this book a "4" rating, not for its literary quality necessarily but for its ability to engross the reader.
It reads like a story at an ACOA meeting (adult children of alcoholics) as Gregg and Gina Hill, in alternating sections, tell the story of their childhood with their criminal, drug-addicted, alcoholic, alternating doting and abusive father and their nurturing but enabling mother.
Both of them turned out fine, which is an inspiration and a credit to their mother and her extended family (dad's family is conspicuously absent in the dedication) but first they went through hell, while Gregg raged silently and Gina lived in full-fledged denial.
"Wiseguy" was a national bestseller and "Goodfellas" a hit movie, the one for which most people think Scorsese should have received an Oscar. But "Wiseguy", Henry Hill's as-told-to story to Nick Pileggi and Hill's subsequent book "Gangsters and Goodfellas" were Henry's stories and the omissions were glaring. Naturally Hill wasn't going to go into detail about his more violent crimes or his own abuse or tawdry manipulations of his own family.
While it's clear that Hill's charm earned hm a pass from a lot of people ultimately those around him paid a terrible price and both of his children make clear that the price of survival was getting far, far away from Henry and the family pathology.
The earnestness of their voices at the pain of being continually uprooted usually because of Henry's grandstanding and refusal to keep a low profile or to clean up his act in Witness Protection ring true.
This is not a "glamorous" story. In most respects it's quite sad. But for each of Henry's kids at least, there is a happy ending.
