The second night of the String Cheese Incident's stand in Austin opens with a barnburner rendition of "Daryl," with its newgrass stomp and stroll and wide-open country-jazz improvisation that pretty much sets the tone for the entire evening. Over the course of three CDs, the polish and purpose of SCI's particular brand of musical artistry never lag. The name of the game here was adventure to be sure, but the SCI insurance policy of providing a good time was not to be ignored either. Whereas the previous evening was a shorter concert by a third and relied on a kind of ragged intensity, the night of April 5 was sheer finesse and spirit. "Daryl," with all of its Vassar Clements-ish swing, is a brief excursion into the field of progressive bluegrass that gives way immediately into a nearly 20-minute version of the slinky funk that is "Got What We Wanted." The low-key play of jazzy interludes weaving around the rhythm section and Bill Nershi's acoustic guitar solos are textured against a reggae-infused backbeat that allows for keyboard atmospherics and fiddle drones. As if this dreamy piece of freakware weren't enough, the band launches into "Yo Sé," and gives a Cuban merengue workout its best shot with stunning piano work by Kyle Hollingsworth. The set goes out a few tracks later with "Get Up Jam," which segues into "Black and White." The middle third comes out easy and bright with "Smile" and some groovy bass work by Keith Moseley, before shimmering into "Don't Say." But the treat is the medley that begins with Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours," funks over into "Good Times Around the Bend," and rocks through an elongated series of grooves on "Galactic." Disc three is where SCI's rubber meets the road, beginning with a particularly inspired version of "Rollover," with Nershi's guitar soaring out of the top end, tempered by Hollingsworth's piano line stating a simple melody that is deceptively knotty because of the interplay of the rhythm section. From the dub reggae middle through the improvisation that gives way to "Emma's Dream," SCI is almost symbiotic, cooking through one set of rhythmic figures after another and careening through modal music, bluegrass, country, funk, and rock with glissando guitars and intricate counterpoint. As the theme from "Rollover" gives way to yet another extended improv that eventually ends with the stunning "Black Clouds," it is obvious that SCI was burning from the very start on this tour. This is a fine addition to the 19-CD set, but a great pick if you only want one. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
