The only "western" novelist, and I hate to use that term, because the mere mention of it causes some people to cringe, who is better than Ernest Haycox is Zane Grey. And in this biography of his father, Ernest Haycox, Jr. details his father's struggle to balance popular "serial" novels the magazines would publish and the kind of books he really wanted to write. And he did by pushing the boundries as much as he dared with each succeeding novel and is credited with lifting the "western" above the standard fare of the day. Overall, his struggle was an economic one, and anyone with a family to support can understand the stress and delimma Haycox was faced with. And had he lived beyond the fifty years he did, I am sure we would be hailing him as a great novelist of "literature" not just a great "western" writer. The book also details other facets of the man few would expect to find--he was extremely civic minded, and overwhelmingly self effacing and modest, yet loved big cars and big houses. And he was determined to succeed as a writer. His books reflect the historian he was by the careful attention to detail--dress, mannerisms, location, and descriptions. He loved his native Oregon, and his goal was to write the history of the Northwest. Sadly, he didn't get the chance. For anyone who has ever read an Ernest Haycox book or any of the hundreds of short stories he wrote, this book is a must read.
