Susemihl's admirable edition. It is a pleasure to me to have an opportunity of thanking him, however inadequately, for his complete survey of existing material, for his judicious handling of it, and for the many additions which he has made to our knowledge of a very difficult treatise. These words I wrote in 1898. I repeat them now with a fuller comprehension of the difficulty of his undertaking and with a gratitude correspondingly enhanced.
