Excerpt from On Protoplasm: Being an Examination of Dr. James Hutchinson Stirling's Criticism of Professor Huxley's Views Now if we take the first of these phrases, there is such a thing as a physical basis or matter of life, it is manifest that Professor Huxley could not employ such language without believing that there is a certain material element common to all living things; and it is further manifest that he regards this common element as protoplasm, since he uses this term and the physical basis of life as equi valents. Is Professor Huxley warranted in asserting that there is a certain matter common to everything that lives? Dr. Stirling thinks that he is not, and adopts two lines of argument to prove the erroneous ness of the conclusion. He first affirms that this conclusion is not accepted by the most innovating of the Germans, and secondly he advances a theory of his own which places the nucleus above the pro toplasm in importance.
