This is actually one of my favorite books by this author. It gives you a feeling of how the Civil War shattered so many lives. This story is very haunting and beautiful. There may be a few elements to the story that are slightly unfinished., but overall I loved the story. Sort of an American Gothic!

"On Agate Hill is a fast-moving narrative about a young woman's life in the years following the Civil War. Told in journal and letter format, it chronicles the various stages of her life: that of a child growing up on an abandoned plantation(Agate Hill), her adolescence at an exclusive girls' school, her experiences as a schoolteacher, and as the wife of a mountain man. Lyrical, and full of interesting details, it is a well-written account of her various experiences, and has fairly well-rounded characters. I thought this book was worth reading
