Ford was a Mississippi-born poet who along with Britton, was part of a (largely) gay literary and artistic community that included his sister the actress Ruth Ford, authors Glenway Wescott and Carl Van Vechten, publisher Monroe Wheeler, artists Paul Cadmus and Pavel Tchelitchew, Lincoln Kirstein, George Balanchine, photograther George Platt Lynes, Julien Levy, Djuna Barnes, Orson Welles, and others.
