A fourth book is coming out this fall. McCall is a self-made man who graduated from the University of St. Thomas and went on to a very active and successful business career in the Twin Cities. They were James Shannon (ordained a Bishop) and Bob Short, active political figure and well-known sports team owner and businessman. His wife used to chide him about his writing, saying that he was wasting his time. She died a few years ago and Leo took up writing again for self-entertainment. Now three books later readers are all the better for it. He has worked in advertising and the optical field which he still is actively pursuing. The Old Como Gang Long Gone is about a charming young boy named Harry McCool. The first paragraph would make any creative writing teacher proud. The reader feels the cold of St. Paul in the winter, the shock of a little boy losing his father and still delivering his paper route and picking up bread at the local bakery the day of the funeral. The poverty of his family was wrapped up and delivered in the first paragraph. Anyone who has lived in St. Paul should read this novel. You will recognize the names of the streets and schools and down-town landmarks long gone. It is interesting to note that this again is a thinly disguised story by McCall about his life during 1927. Leo uses fictional names of neighbors, priests, nuns and friends.It is a trick he used with his first successful book Business is Baloney, which is about the Brown and Bigelow Company of St. Paul. His second book was a mystery. Murder in the Arboretum, which has a strong following among rose fanciers because of his description of roses in the plot.
