This compilation album brings together several Global Pacific Records artists, plus musician from other labels, for a relaxing session of music with an ocean theme. Nature sounds--surf, dolphins--cover much of the music and provide bridges between pieces. Teja Bell (guitar) and Steve Kindler (keyboards) begin the album with a relaxing freeform piece titled "En Dolphins," followed by the upbeat title cut from their album Dolphin Smiles. Its Latin nightclub flavor seems out of place on this album. Later, they offer pieces from Sounding (a mysterious cavernous fantasy) and Driftwood, a piece lazy-afternoon piece with mandolin, guitar, and violin. Dean Evenson offers "Lightly Salted" from his album Ocean Dreams; its whale songs and dolphin squeals intertwine cheerily with the watery echoes sounds of hammered dulcimer. Pianist Rojo offers a gentle, romantic piece from Nocturnal Afternoon. Christopher Peacock is another lyrical pianist offering two pieces from his Island Time album. Spacemusic composer and saxophonist Rusty Crutcher evokes the dreamy timeless moments of a celestial event from Ocean Eclipse. "Grace" from Bob Kindler's Waters of Life combines chamber ensemble, tabla and guitar; the cut is like a skip on the beach. The most dramatic and majestic piece on the album is a version of Debussy's "Sunken Cathedral" as performed by harpist Georgia Kelly and Steven Kindler, synthesizer. Some of the choices for this ocean theme album seemed obviously connected; some seemed a stretch, even with the addition of nature sounds. ~ Carol Wright, Rovi
