It is well known that the slave trade was a brutal business as was slavery itself. What is not well known is the brutal way in which the English seamen were treated. The trade was detested so the first step was to trick them into debt so they had the choice of prison which would make them unemployable or signing on to a slaver. They were then assaulted and flogged without mercy for any offence by sadistic captains and officers and were left to survive without accommodation and with inadequate food and water. Those who survived the six months it took to collect slaves and reach the West Indies deserted there, incapable of work and with no support. They lingered around the port until they died. Very few reached England again. The author, in this short and powerful book describes from his own experience what happened to them on a slaver. Once read it will not be forgotten. The treatment of seamen was one of the things Clarkson discovered when he began to investigate the slave trade.
