I shall now continue my journey from thence to Cruwys MorChard, first taking a peep at Ilfracomb, which place I also visited. Of this singularly romantic spot, however, I can say from myself but very little, having staidthere only about four hours. I am told that if I had passed through the townand seen the disposition of the rocks on the further side of the bay, I should have been very much gratified; but this was not in my power, I therefore con t tented myself with taking a view of the approach to Ilfracomb from Barnstaple, at the distance of about a mile and a half. I think it remarkably picturesque; and, as it takes in as much of the church and a few buildings as can be distinguished between the trees in the valley, which is shadowed by the bold rocks behind, and extends on the right to the port, and opens to the Welsh coast, I hope it will be found that the trouble was not thrown away. It is a sun-set, and will come opposite this page. Ilfracomb is situated on the Bristol channel, forty-nine miles north northwest of Exeter. This port is of infinite use on that side of the coast, for it has a road and harbour which afford a secure shelter for vessels, particularly from IreLand, when it would be extremely dangerous to attempt Barnstaple Bay. Jt is also remarkable for most excellent lights to direct ships at sea. Owing to these advantages it is become rather populous, and indeed rich; and as it is frequented as a bathing place, both business and pleasure are carried on with a considerable degree of spirit.
