"No music! Just an interview with attitude," reads a sticker on this CD-and-book package. The hour-long interview, recorded in March 1995, features Oasis bandmembers Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs and Noel Gallagher, answering questions from an unnamed female American interviewer. Thankfully, Arthurs is in the right speaker and Gallagher in the left, both recorded quite clearly, while the interviewer is at a distance from the microphones, though still audible. At a time when Oasis' first album, Definitely Maybe, was just making an impression in the U.S., after having become a massive hit back in the U.K., Arthurs and Gallagher (in heavy, slang-filled British accents) answer some standard interview questions, displaying the confidence for which their band is noted. Asked if they get tired of playing the same songs, for example, Gallagher (who wrote the songs) says he never will, "because they're classics." Which comes first, the music or the lyrics? "Music." The two reflect back on the band's origins in Manchester and praise heroes like the Smiths' Johnny Marr, who Gallagher says inspired him to write songs on the guitar, but not be the lead singer. Speaking to an interviewer with a constant flow of flattery, Gallagher outdoes her. "I believe we make the best records in the world, and we're the best band," he says at one point, and at another "We expect to be bigger than the Beatles within the next five years. It's as simple as that." The accompanying 5½" x 4¾" paperback book, running 120 heavily illustrated pages, includes Mick St. Michael's well-written history of the band up through mid-1996, along with a discography and chronology. As long as the buyer does not pick this package up expecting to hear Oasis music (which seems unlikely) and is an Oasis fan already, there is much entertainment to be had. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
