When Warner Brothers demanded that director Lindsay Anderson shorten the movie, he didn't know what to cut. At a studio screening, the projectionist mistakenly skipped Reel 15, and the movie worked rather well without that footage. So most of the world got to know the movie minus Reel 15. In about 1981 Warners relented and told Anderson to restore the movie to its original length. He was thrilled, but discovered that all the elements had been discarded. Eventually Warners found a single release print that was still complete, and ran off a new internegative of Reel 15 from it. Everyone lived happily after... EXCEPT that everyone had forgotten about another important sequence that had been deleted, which was never restored, and may never be. Fortunately, that sequence still survives at least on paper, pages 133 through 138. Your goal in life is now to trace down a print of the film that still contains that sequence!
