In its short history in the U.S., the Now anthology series has developed a rigid approach to its arrangement of recent hits on successive albums, and the ninth volume is typical. It begins its 20-track sequence with big, broad-based, dance-oriented hits like Pink's "Get the Party Started" and the Billboard chart-toppers "Family Affair," by Mary J. Blige, and "Ain't It Funny," by Jennifer Lopez (tracks 1-5). These give way to a mini-set of rap songs, with their characteristic boasts, references to luxury items, and obscenities that have been only barely clipped out, supposedly making these rants unobjectionable to the teen ears at which the Now series is aimed (tracks 6-10). Then, there are some secondary pop hits by such favorites as 'N Sync, Backstreet Boys, and Destiny's Child (tracks 11-15). And the album concludes with mainstream rockers like U2 and Aerosmith and heavy metal acts like Incubus (tracks 16-20). Hits radio and MTV fans may be disappointed with the remixes found here, particularly the slowed down version of "Get the Party Started" that mixes in a rendition of Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams Are Made of This." And many of them no doubt will be programming their CD players to avoid certain songs and repeat others. But, like its predecessors, Now That's What I Call Music!
