Excerpt from Notes on the Settlement or Colonization of British Subjects in India: With an Appendix of Proofs and Illustrations Indeed, it is not too much to assert, that the very existence? Of the towns of Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay, still more of the settlements in the straits of Malacca, as ports of foreign commerce, has depended upon the class of persons, who, in former periods of the commercial history of India, used to be called Interlopers. At the close'of the last charter, the total, exports and imports of these places was certainly short of thirteen million pounds per annum; they are, at present, pro bably not under twenty-six millions, or have been doubled in' the short period of twenty years - the commerce of the East India Company, with the exception of two or three articles still exported under pretext of making a remittance of terri torial revenue, having meanwhile altogether ceased.
