A marriage at sixteen, and similar marriages of his sons, would make it possible to have grandchildren, ' p. 15. Ans. If Judah married at sixteen, he would have been nineteen when his third son, Shelah, was born, and thirty-five, when Shelah was sixteen, and therefore (according to Dr. M'caul) of proper age to marry, --at which time Tamar conceived by Judah; hence Judah would have been thirty-six when Pharez and Zarah were born, and it is difficult to see how in thirteen years more Pharez could have had children, if he was only marriageable at sixteen. (4) I have to thank Dr. M'caul for 'freely admitting, ' p.Yl, what the great body of my critics have ridiculed me for asserting, that' all the congregation' in L.viii.1-4 means 'not merely the 600,000 adult males, but women and children.' He adds, ' The whole congregation was convoked or summoned. And all thus convoked, who were not prevented, turned out of their tents to assist at a great national ceremony, the consecration of Aaron's priesthood.' (5) Dr. M'caul then takes a number of pages to show that--'When people of common sense have read that 'the assembly was gathered unto the door of the Tabernacle of the Congregation, ' they have understood that as many as could of this great multitude stood at the door--that the princes, elders, and officers, had the precedency--that the rest stood behind and about, with their faces turned to the Tabernacle, knowing what was going on, and expecting some manifestation of the Lord's presence, ' &c, p.lS.
