In Not in My Gayborhood!, Theodore Greene draws on seven years of ethnographic, interview, and archival research gathered from gay neighborhoods in Washington, DC. It introduces and explores the concept of the vicarious citizen, which include a diverse group of self-identified community members, some of whom were former or displace residents of the neighborhood, who draw on a variety of practices to mobilize against perceived thereat to their notion of an authentic community. Whether challenging the increased presence of heterosexual families, the displacement of institutions due to rising property values, or the toning down of a neighborhood's sexual culture, vicarious citizens draw on symbolic claims to to the physical space of the neighborhood as a form of self-enfranchisement, with a focus on the conduct of key community anchors.
