There are a number of great WWII novels out there but it's not quite so often that you run into a WWI one. Not By Sight is a wonderful story of love, forgiveness, seeing beneath the surface, and how the smallest action can dramatically change lives.
Grace is a well-meaning young lady who only wants to help but her naïve enthusiasm can sometimes lead her a little astray. But it just might be exactly what Jack needs and at just the right time.
I have to admit that I did guess who the infiltrator was fairly early on but then Kate Breslin tossed in other 'clues' that made me question my suspicions and I was in for some real surprises by the end. People aren't always exactly as they appear which is a lesson that Grace and Jack must both learn.
I just have to say that the Bethany House art team really did a great job with the cover. It is the perfect lead-in to the story and is one of my favorites for this year. So mysterious, even brooding, and what a scrumptious dress!
An enjoyable historical with all of the drama and excitement of war set in a seemingly peaceful landscape in the English countryside. Not By Sight hearkens back to a simpler and yet just as complex era, Kate Breslin's Grace must navigate through the sometimes murky and confusing waters of growing up/maturing in a difficult and dark time. If you love historicals and English stories don't miss this one!
(I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own.)

Second book as good as the first
Reading "Not by Sight" is like traveling in time. Traveling back to 1917 England during WWI. Kate Breslin not only wrote a book, she paints a beautiful portrait of the Kent area during this sad time. She has a very gifted story telling-talent that I have not experienced in years. Without bogging down the narrative and using descriptive language, she keeps the pace flowing page after page, while filling the canvas with color, sounds and emotions.
Kate Breslin takes a naive, faith-filled young lady and slowly changes her into a mature and realistic individual. Grace Mabry learns what the real world is really like after being raised by an overprotective father, joining many woman during WWI with work that adds to the war effort. Grace, ends up in a job that she is not very suited for, but takes on the challenge even with some who don't like her.
The titled Earl of Stonebrooke also learns that he does still have faith, it just took Grace Mabry to show him, like her name implies. And the title of this book surprisingly has a double meaning. Clever.
Her leading lady is also surrounded by many secondary characters that I wish had their own story. Maybe in a next book or two? And the leading man also has his friend I want to get to know more about.
As with her other book, "For Such a Time", this novel is a page turner with an ending full of drama twists and turns. This is a very well researched book with a lot of facts not widely known, slipped in, here and there.
The only thing I did not enjoy was finishing this book. I wanted more. And I hope to see more from this wonderful author.
