Seller's Description:
Very Good in Very Good jacket. Book. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. Original publisher's full blue cloth stamped in silver and gilt, top edges gilt, uncut. First edition of Peary's copiously illustrated account of his Greenland expeditions. 2 volume set; 521 and 625 pages; many plates, illustrations, and maps; folding map; frontispiece portraits; Peary's first book contains an account of his sledge trip from Disko Bay to the edge of the Greenland ice cap (1886) and his explorations of northern Greenland and discovery of Peary Land (1891-92). Peary's expeditions in 1886 and 1891-7 determined the insularity of Greenland and mapped the northern extension of the icecap. These expeditions offered Peary the experience and knowledge of the region that he needed in order to lead his later expedition to the North Pole. Peary's wife accompanied him on the later voyages, thus becoming the first white woman to winter in the Arctic. His account is distinguished by his fine style and his moving devotion to the team of dogs that brought him over the Great Ice. With photographic frontispiece portraits, hundreds of illustrations throughout, and large folding map at rear of Volume II. There is a half inch closed tear on the title page of Vol 2. Previous owner's stamp on title page of both volumes. Both are in very good condition. The front boards of both volumes show a bit of rubbing to them; the same is true for the rear boards. In addition, the tips on both volumes are slightly bent. It appears that the front and rear paste downs and free end papers of both volumes have been replaced as the paper is cleaner, thicker and more crisp than the rest of the text blocks. The result is that the hinges are completely intact and the text blocks are tight and complete. The original gilt on the top of text block on each volume is relatively bright and shiny. The spines on both volumes show a bit of scuffing and Volume 2 appears to have a small tear in the area of the title. Both spines are easily readable and there is minimal loss of gilt. All in all a very presentable copy of these two volumes.

Seller's Description:
Near Fine. No Jacket Issued. 4to-over 9¾"-12" tall. 521pp/illus/maps. Peary's first of three books written about his expeditions to reach the North Pole. These volumes cover three of eight trips through Greenland toward the North Pole, including the controversial 'Bringing home of the "Saviksue, " or Great Cape-York Meteorites. ' Despite questionable gaps in the evidence supporting Peary's North Pole claim, his successive furthest north records and adventurous spirit made the American explorer a hero in the United States. Vol 1 only. Text clean.
