This sweeping historic romance novel weaves unrequited love, reincarnation, royal treasure, and destiny into the fabric of English history, producing a centuries-spanning story that makes up for occasional spotty writing with a great plot and memorable characters.
Unusual for a mainstream romance novel, it is written from the man's point of view - in this case, successful architect Andrew Moffat, whose research trip to Britain leads him much further afield than he bargained for. Andrew has lived multiple lives, and in all of those lives he has loved the same woman - Chloe, a high-spirited English temptress occasionally accused of being a witch. And time after time, an evil spirit once known as Hurst has found a way to interfere, with tragic consequences.
Central to the plot is the Nonsuch Lure itself - a fabulous gem-encrusted royal orb which once belonged to the English royal family. Hurst wants it, and his murderous greed triggers a tragic set of events that bring him, Andrew, and Chloe together repeatedly down the centuries under the shadow of the mystery of the Lure's disappearance.
With vignettes set during the medieval period and the 1700s, "The Nonsuch Lure" gives the reader a richly detailed window into those turbulent times as backplot to Andrew and Chloe's continuing story. At times reminiscent of "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever," this novel skillfully jumps back and forth in time as Andrew, with the help of a psychotherapist, explores his past lives and how previous events are affecting his present - and his future.
The story effectively combines mystery, historical study, supernatural suspense, and romance - with the interesting twist that the main character's love interest appears only in flashbacks as he regresses to his past lives. The historical flashback sequences appear to be fairly well researched and accurate, and the author cleverly plants clues in those sequences that are picked up later in the narrative by Andrew in the present-day world.
There are a couple of wildly improbable plot twists - for example, Andrew happens to stumble upon a colonial diary in a bookstore that turns out to be written by one of his past-life incarnations - but this is after all a romance novel, with destiny as one of its main themes, so the reader shouldn't be surprised.
If the novel really does have a weakness, it would have to be the writing itself, which in places lacks polish and is a little awkward. The author seems much more comfortable writing historical sequences than present-day narrative. Fortunately, this doesn't intrude into the story, which is interesting enough to excuse the occasional lapse.
Overall, this is a grand historical romance novel - historically interesting, emotionally satisfying, with enough mystery and suspense to keep the reader engaged. A highly recommended read!
