Die vorliegende Studie nimmt den Umgang mit neuen Religionsgemeinschaften im Kaiserreich in den Blick. Untersucht wird, wie die deutsche Gesellschaft vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg auf alternative religiose Denk- und Verhaltensweisen reagierte und warum sie bestimmte religiose Optionen negativ sanktionierte. Der Fokus liegt auf dem Handeln der Polizei- und Verwaltungsbehorden. Deren einschlagige Aktenuberlieferung wird einer detaillierten Analyse unterzogen. Als Fallbeispiel dient der staatliche Umgang mit Mazdaznan, einer um 1900 in den USA entstandenen, bis dato noch ungenugend erforschten religiosen Bewegung, die in der Literatur u.a. als Rassen-, Gesundheits- oder Korperreligion gefasst wird. Zum Vergleich werden weitere neue Religionen, z.B. Mormonen und Siebenten-Tags-Adventisten, in die Analyse einbezogen. Im Ergebnis liegt ein innovativer Beitrag zur bislang noch immer zu einseitig auf die christlichen Kirchen hin untersuchten Religionsgeschichte des Kaiserreichs vor. Zugleich liefert das Buch Uberlegungen zur Arbeit des Religionshistorikers, etwa indem der Quellenwert archivalischer Zeugnisse fur die Religionsforschung reflektiert und fur weitere religionshistorische Mikrostudien geworben wird.
