For months Christiana lived a terrifying hide-and-seek existence, wondering if she'd ever feel anything other than fear and hunger. But after surviving the war, she swapped one devastation for another when the family that took her to the United States enslaved her to serve their own needs. Hungry, abused, and far from anything or anyone familiar, she wondered if she would ever know freedom again. Eventually, Christiana gained the courage to seek help from the Department of Children and Family Services, and was able to enter the foster system.
