British story about a group of children who live in a wretched row of houses where bets are strictly forbidden. When a new child arrives whose cat promptly has kittens it immediately provides a basis for friendship and gives the children a new interest as well as an important private life. Unfortunately the hiding place the children choose for the kittens is also chosen by a delinquent teddy boy as a hide-out for his stolen goods. This unlooked for added complication inevitably brings new problems, and the pace of the book moves even faster than before but as in all good stories, everything is eventually sorted out satisfactorily.
