Mr. Ford?s first series (the Leo Waterman books) was a quirky but enjoyable dive into the morally dubious underbelly of a big city. Since I was hoping for more of the same from his new series (Frank Corso books), I was hugely disappointed.
In No man?s Land, Frank Corso is an arrogant, rude writer who becomes in involved in a savage, violent jailbreak by a cunning and ruthless ex-submarine captain. Supposedly the man has been driven mad by his inhumane imprisonment but if we?re supposed to feel sympathy, Mr. Ford fails miserably There are simply no sympathetic characters in a plot that remains lifeless despite (or because of ) the buckets of blood spilled.
Though we?ve become used to such Rambo violence in the movies, it?s still a disappointment in a novel such as this.
