If you read only one B. Traven book (besides "Death Ship"), make it this one, especially if you write or aspire to be a writer. College sophomores are sometimes told to practice writing like Hemingway to rid their prose of excessive purple. I'd recommend reading and imitating the stories in this book for the same reason. While tied together in being set in Mexico, they're varied in plot , character, and mood. The first story, "The Night Visitor," is the most vivid and haunting, not to be missed. You can read these stories for the politics in them, for the culture of Mexico they portray, for their characterizations, for their craftsmanship, a few for their humor, to become better acquainted with their author, or just for the unholy pleasure of relishing truly great writing.
